MLB All Star Game Coaches 2023 and Managers

MLB All Star 2023 coach for the National League is Rob Thomspon. Rob is also the head coach of defending NL champion Philadelphia Phillies.

Derek Shelton of the Pittsburgh Pirates has joined the coaching panel of the NL team upon the request of Thompson. Shelton has been serving as the Phillies' manager for the last four years, since being appointed on November 27, 2019.

Tomas Vera of the Cincinnati Reds and Anthony Reyes of the San Francisco Giants are selected as the athletic trainers for the NL team. Lastly, Dustin Clarke of the New York Mets with an experience of many years will look after strength and conditioning.

Head Coach Rob Thompson

After leading the Philadelphia Phillies to the National League Championship, Rob Thompson is recognized with the coveted All-Star selection.

The Phillies triumphed over San Diego Padres with the final score of 4-1 en route to clinching the 2022 National League Championship Series.

Thompson has been serving as the Phillies' manager since June 2022 after Joe Girardi was fired following a dismal 22–29 start to the season.

Although Rob was initially designated as an interim manager, Philadelphia officially named him the 55th manager in franchise history on October 10, 2022. Thompson instantly paid off the faith with the NL Pennant.

Moreover, he previously served as the bench coach for the Phillies from 2018 - 2022. Before joining the Phils, he worked in various positions at the New York Yankees and its affiliate teams from 1990 - 2017.

Having started as a  third base coach, Thompson made a gradual leap with the role of field coordinator, director of player development, VP of minor league development, first base coach, and bench coach whilst working in the Yankees organization.

MLB All Star 2023 manager for the American League is Dusty Baker. Dusty guided the Houston Astros to World Series Championship in 2022.

Seattle Mariners manager Scott Servais will join the coaching panel led by Dusty Baker. Servais is currently in his 8th season in the managerial role for the Mariners, having embarked on the journey ahead of the 2016 MLB season.

Former center fielder Billy North has also joined the 2023 All-Star coaching staff as the honorary coach. North spent a decade playing in the MLB, whilst representing Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics, LA Dodgers, and San Francisco Giants.

On top of becoming the 1974 World Series champion with the A's, Billy also became the two-time AL stolen base leader in 1974 and 1976.

Mike Frostad of the Los Angeles Angels and Kyle Torgerson of the Mariners have been designated as the athletic trainers. Likewise, Kiyoshi Momose of the Red Sox will serve as the strength and conditioning coach.

Meanwhile, the whole Astros coaching staff including Alex Cintron, Joe Espada, Josh Miller and Bill Murphy will be part of the All-Star panel.

Head Coach Dusty Baker

The 3-time NL Manager of the Year, Dusty Baker will be leading the American League team in the upcoming 2023 All-Star Game at T-Park.

Houston Astros relished a phenomenal season in 2022 under the tutelage of Baker. They finished first in the West Divison with a 106-56 record.

The Astros clean swept the Yankees in 4 games to win the AL Pennant and defeated the Phillies in the World Series Final to win only the 2nd championship in franchise history.

With the historic triumph, Dusty Baker became only the 7th man in MLB history to win World Series both as a manager and a player. Baker had previously lifted the championship in 1991 while playing for the Dodgers.

The former outfielder represented Atlanta Braves, LA Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, and Oakland Athletics during his illustrious playing tenure from 1968 to 1986. Dusty made it to the All-Star team consecutively in 1981 and 1982.

After bidding adieu to his professional playing career, Baker embarked on a coaching role with San Francisco Giants in 1998 and later served as the Giants' manager from 1993 to 2002.

His other managerial stints include Chicago Cubs (2003-06), Cincinnati Reds (2008-13), Washington Nationals (2016-17), and Houston Astros (2020 - present).

The All-Star roster was announced during the 2023 Scotts MLB All-Star Selection Show on ESPN, with several other additions over the weekend.

The players for starting positions across both AL and NL are selected by the fans across two phases of voting. Likewise, the pitchers and relievers are selected via managers, player ballot, and the Commissioner's Office.

Pitcher and designated hitter Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels got the most votes in Phase 1 of the American League starters selection. Meanwhile, Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. was the leading vote-getter in the NL starters selection.

The 2023 MLB All-Star Game is set to start at 8 p.m. ET on July 11, Tuesday. Fox Sports Network will provide the tv coverage of the mega event.

T-Mobile Park, the home stadium of the Seattle Mariners will host the Midsummer Classic for the first time since 2001. The ballpark has a seating capacity of 47,929. It was originally named Safeco Field, which was later changed to T-Mobile Park on January 1, 2019.

The American League has been extremely dominant of late winning the last nine All-Star games. AL team actually leads the overall series 47-43-2.

Zac Gallen of the Diamondbacks and Gerrit Cole of the NY Yankees have been announced as the starting pitchers for NL and AL respectively by the MLB All Star managers ahead of the match day.

Although Aaron Judge and Mike Trout were voted in the starters lineup, they will be missing the game due to injury. Adolis Garcia of the Texas Rangers and Austin Hays of the Baltimore Orioles will be the replacement starters.

Provided that the game is tied after nine innings, a home run derby will be used to determine the winner. Three hitters from each team would be sent to the plate, whereby they will get 3 swings each, and the team with the most total homers will be declared champion.
