Tour de France winners by year include Jonas Vingegaard, Tadej Pogacar, Egan Bernal, and Geraint Thomas. Chris Froome won three years in a row.

Tour de France has been held annually since 1903 with two breaks in between since its inception. The break period includes 1915 to 1918 due to World War I and 1940 to 1946 due to World War II. This year's 2023 Tour de France started on July 1 and will end on July 23, 2023.

NBC network is covering the event for the American audiences and Jai Hindley leads the general class wearing a yellow jersey at the end of Stage five this year. Adam Yates was the General Class leader for the first four stages before the jersey was taken by Jai.

Felix Gall has taken the polka dot jersey from Neilson Powless at the end of the fourth stage making him the mountain class leader. Tadej Pogačar is wearing his white jersey for the fourth year in a row as of the end of stage five.

Although it might be too early to have an idea about who might win the cycling event this year in France we do have a list of the past 10 winners.

1. Jonas Vingegaard - 2022

Jonas Vingegaard won his first Tour de France in 2022. Vingegaard completed the race in 79 hours 32 minutes and 29 seconds with a 2-minute 43 seconds lead.

Vingegaard is a professional cyclist from Denmark. He was born on December 10, 1996, making him 26 years old. The 5 feet 9 inches tall athlete weighs 60 kg and currently competes for UCI WorldTeam Team Jumbo–Visma.

Jonas made his Tour de France debut in 2021 with team Jumbo-Visma as a replacement for Tom Dumoulin. He was able to achieve the second position in General Category at the end of the race

He also became the only member of Jumbo-Visma to complete the race and the first Danish athlete to achieve a podium position since 1996.

Vingegaard was able to achieve the first position in his second year at the race winning the General Class. He wore the Yellow jersey starting from the 11th stage all the way to the end of the competition securing the first position.

2. Tadej Pogacar - 2021 And 2020

Tadej Pogacar won Tour de France in 2020 and 2021. Pogacar won three categories in 2021 wearing Yellow, Polka dots, and White jerseys.

The two times Tour de France champion Tadej was born in Komenda, Slovenia, on September 21, 1998, making him 24 years old at the time of the 2023 competition.

Pogacar became the second youngest cyclist to win Tour de France at 21 years old in 2020. He currently competes for UCI WoldTeam UAE Team Emirates and has been a member of the team since 2019.

Tadej made his Tour de France debut in 2020 as a support for the team leader Fabio Aru but after Aru withdrew from the Tour, he managed to win multiple stages before ultimately winning the Tour itself.

Pogacar became the 12th person to win Tour de France in their first attempt and the second youngest person at 21 years old. In addition to General Class, he also won the Mountain Class and Youngest Rider class in the 2020 edition.

Tadej returned to the tour for the second time in 2021 and won the competition by 5 minutes and 20 seconds. He completed 2,121.6 miles in 82 hours 56 minutes and 36 seconds.

3. Egan Bernal - 2019

Past Winners of the Tour de France include Colombian cyclist Egan Bernal who bagged his first victory at Tour de France in 2019.

Bernal won the competition by one minute and eleven seconds without winning a single stage. He is also the only Columbian cyclist to win the French Grand Tour.

Bernal currently competes for UCI WorldTeam Ineos Grenadiers. Egan was born on January 13, 1997, and is currently 26 years old. He was eligible for competing in the White Jersey category in 2019 which he won after bagging his first victory at Tour de France.

Egan made his Tour de France debut in 2018 and completed the event in the 15th position. He returned for the second time in 2019 and bagged the victory for his team.

The cyclist returned to the Tour for the third time in 2020 but did not finish the race due to back pain and withdrew after stage 16. Bernal has returned to the competition for the fourth time but has not been able to achieve a position in the top 10 of any category as of the end of stage 5.

4. Geraint Thomas - 2018

Geraint Thomas won the 2018 Tour de France with Team Sky giving his team a fourth consecutive win. Thomas won with a 1 min 51-sec margin.

Thomas is a Welsh professional cyclist born on May 25, 1986. The 37-year-old athlete is one of the few elite cyclists to enjoy massive success in both track and road cycling competitions in their career.

Geraint currently rides for the UCI WorldTeam Ineos Grenadiers representing Great Britain. He made his Tour de France debut in 2007 as one of the youngest cyclists in the competition. Thomas finished the 2007 Tour de France competition in the 140th position of 141 finishers.

Since 2007, Thomas has made appearances in 12 Tour de France competitions and has finished 11 times. He did not finish the 2017 Tour due to an accident resulting in a broken collarbone.

 He became the first Welsh cyclist to wear a yellow jersey in the 2017 Tour de France. Geraint won the 2018 race and placed in second position in 2019 and 3rd position in 2022.

5. Chris Froome - 2017, 2016, 2015, And 2013

Christopher Froome is a four-time Tour de France champion winning the competition in 2017, 2016, 2015, and 2013. He finished second in 2012.

Froome is a Kenyan-British professional cyclist born in Nairobi Kenya to English migrant parents. The 38-year-old athlete was born on May 20, 1985, and currently competes for UCI ProTeam Israel–Premier Tech.

Chris is the only cyclist to hold four wins at Tour de France in the 21st century. He made his debut at the event in the year 2008 completing the competition in 83rd position, he returned four years later in 2012 securing second place.

Tour de France Past Winners to win more than Froome are Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, and Miguel Indurain, all tied at 5 wins.

His first win at Tour de France came in the year 2013. In 2014, Froome withdrew from the race after falling over three times in two days. He bagged consecutive three victories in 2015, 2016, and 2017. Froome also won the mountain classification in 2015.

6. Vincenzo Nibali - 2014

Vincenzo Nibali won the 2014 Tour de France with a margin of 7 minutes and 37 seconds. Nibali has the highest margin win at Tour de France in the 21st century.

Nibali is an Italian former professional cyclist who has won all three Grand Tours in his career. He won Giro d'Italia twice in 2013 and 2016, Tour de France once in 2014, and Vuelta a España once in 2010.

Vincenzo made his Tour de France debut in 2008 finishing in 20th position. He returned for the second time the following year and completed the race in 6th position. His third return placed him in 3rd position and he won the competition in his fourth attempt.

The Tour de France King of the Mountains winners list also includes Vincenzo Nibali. He also competed five more times but he did not finish the tour two times.

7. Bradley Wiggins - 2012

Bradley Wiggins is the winner of the 2012 Tour de France. Wiggins completed 2172 miles race in 87 hours 34 minutes 47 seconds with a 3 min 21-second margin.

Wiggins is a British former professional cyclist who enjoyed success in both track and road events. He initially started as a track cyclist and slowly transitioned to road cycling later. Bradley made his Tour de France debut in 2006 finishing in the 121 position.

Tour de France winners Chris and Bradley Wiggins both competed for Team Sky. Bradley made a total of six appearances in the Tour de France and completed four out of them.

He did not finish two races but enjoyed positions 121, 3, 1, and 21 in those tours which he completed. He bagged victory in the 2012 Tour de France and never returned to the competition.

8. Cadel Evans - 2011

Cadel Evans is the winner of the 2011 Tour de France competition. Evans became the first and only Australian cyclist to win the tour.

Cadel is a former professional cyclist from Australia who competed in both Mountain Biking events and Road Cycling events in his career. He is also among the only three non-Europeans to win Tour de France.

Cadel yellow-shirted the event in the last two stages of the competition ultimately bagging the victory. He won the 2011 Tour de France with his professional cycling team BMC Racing Team after completing the race in 86 hours 15 minutes and 12 seconds. He won with a margin of one minute and 34 seconds.

Evans made his Tour de France debut in the year 2005, he enjoyed 8th position finish in his debut year. He made regular appearances at the Tour from 2005 until 2013 and enjoyed a position no less than the 39th finish.

9. Andy Schleck - 2010

Andy Schleck is the 2010 Tour de France champion. Schleck was awarded the victory in 2012 after the initial winner Alberto Contador was disqualified.

Schleck is a former professional road bicycle racer from Luxembourg. The 38-year-old cyclist was born in Luxembourg. He made his Tour de France debut in 2008 finishing in 12th position.

His return in 2009 earned him the second spot on the tour. Moreover, Andy also won the fastest young cyclist category (white jersey).

His third return in 2010 initially won him another second spot on the event and yet another white jersey but he was awarded the title in 2012 after the initial 2010 winner Alberto Contador was found using prohibited substances during the race.

Andy returned for the fourth time in 2011 achieving a second position yet again. He returned to the race in 2013 and finished in 20th position and his final return in 2014 resulted in him withdrawing from the race after a crash in stage three.

10. Alberto Contador - 2009

Alberto Contador won Tour de France twice in 2009 and 2007. Contador also won the title in 2010 but it was stripped in 2012 after finding him guilty of doping.

Contador is a Spanish former professional cyclist who competed in road bicycling events. Contador is also among the seven cyclists to have won all three Grand Tours and one among the only two riders to win all three Grand Tours more than once.

Alberto Contador turned professional in 2004 and continued to compete in professional cycling events until his retirement in 2017.

His Tour de France debut came in 2005 when he completed the race in 31st position. He made nine more appearances on the French tour since his debut.
