Team USA basketball coaching staff at FIBA World Cup 2023 Steve Kerr, Erik Spoelstra, Mark Few and Tyronn Lue. Kerr is the head coach for Men's team.

The 19th installation of the prestigious global basketball event 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, has a starting date of August 25.

All 32 national teams have announced their squad and coaching lineup for the tournament, which the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia will host.

The United States also recently released its full 12-man roster and the managers. Steve Kerr, who helped Gregg Popovich in coaching during the 2020 Olympics and 2019 World Cup, will now lead the coaching crew.

Erik Spoelstra is the head coach of NBA finalists Heat. Likewise, Tyronn Lue gaffers the Los Angeles Clippers, and Mark Few leading the charge at Gonzaga University.

Team USA Basketball Head Coach

Steve Kerr became the head coach of Team USA men's basketball on 20 December 2021. Kerr will command the US National Team in the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

Nine time NBA champion (5 times as a player and 4 times as a coach), Kerr took over the role replacing Gregg Popovich.

Popovich decided to step down from coaching the national team in 2021. He guided the USAB to a gold medal in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in 2021.

Besides, Kerr served as the assistant coach under Gregg during the previous FIBA World Championship in 2019. The US Team finished unsatisfactory 7th position in the 2019 competition held in China.

Kerr made history by winning gold with the USA team in the Tokyo Olympics. He became the first USA Basketball national team coach to win a World Cup gold medal as a player.

Now, Kerr holds the top position in the US coaching realm, and to think of it, yes, he is the most suitable candidate for the position.

The former Chicago Bulls point guard has spent 30 years in the NBA doing different roles like playing, coaching, analyzing on TV, and working in the front office. He was also in charge of the Phoenix Suns' basketball operations and management from 2007 to 2010.

Besides, the Golden State Warriors head coach is the first manager to guide his team to 67 wins for three years straight. In 2022, he was recognized as one of the top 15 coaches in NBA history.

As a US men's basketball team main man, Steve Kerr has officially started training camp for the World Cup. He and his staff have a big task ahead of them.

After that, Kerr will lead the team for the Paris Olympic Games,  starting from July 26 to August 11, 2024, in France.

Team USA Basketball Assistant Coaches

The assistant coaches for Team USA Basketball in the upcoming FIBA World Cup include:

  • Erik Spoelstra
  • Tyronn Lue
  • Mark Few

Two-time NBA championship winning head coach Erik Spoelstra will be part of US National basketball team assistant coaches along with Tyronn Lue and Mark Few.

Together, the coaching panel has won seven NBA championships and reached the NCAA Final Four twice.

In July 2021, Spoelstra assumed his initial coaching role with USA Basketball, leading the 2021 USA Select Team. This team practiced alongside and competed against the 2020 U.S. Olympic team, which eventually secured a gold medal in Tokyo.

Since taking over as the head coach of the Miami Heat in April 2008, Spoelstra has guided them to the NBA playoffs 11 times. They reached the NBA Finals in five of those years, with a notable stretch of four consecutive appearances from 2010-11 to 2013-14.

The Heat also succeeded in winning the championship twice during that period.

In February 2023, USA Basketball managing director Grant Hill made an announcement stating that Tyronn Lue will join the coaching staff for the US National team.

Lue expressed that he felt immensely proud to be chosen as part of this amazing team of coaches for the country. He added that being a coach for USA Basketball has always been something he has wanted to do.

Lue steered the Cleveland Cavaliers to the 2016 NBA championship win and further took them to two more final competitions.

The Missouri native is currently the head coach of the NBA side Los Angeles Clippers. He is in his fourth season coaching the Clippers and has won 261 games while losing 186 as a head coach.

Lastly, Mark Norman Few is a college basketball coach currently fulfilling the head coaching position at Gonzaga Bulldogs.

Besides, Few's involvement with the US Team is not new. He has previously served in a similar capacity. In 2015, Few led the US national team during the Pan American Games, and they secured a bronze medal under his coaching. He was picked for assistant coaching duty later in 2019.

Nine of the twelve players have played basketball for the USA before, but the remaining three will play for the national team for the first time. Austin Reaves, Josh Hart, and Cameron Johnson are debutants for Team USA.

Team USA has picked a blend of young and rising talent, as expected. Unlike the 2019 team that came in seventh place, this lineup now seems better thought-out. It has a good mix of strong offense and the ability to play well on defense.
