Shilton was made England's number one goalkeeper following the horrible accident of his predecessor, Gordon Banks. In the 1974 World Cup opening qualifier, he earned 100 caps compared to Clemence with 61.

Shilton kept three clean sheets in 1973 when England defeated Northern Ireland, Wales, and Scotland.

In the 1982 FIFA World Cup, Shilton played in half of the qualifying games in England's group. He also appeared in the finals against Spain.

Shilton went on to play in UEFA Euro 1984 and 1986 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, 1986 FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 1988, and 1990 FIFA World Cup.  

Shilton Was A Part Of 11 Different Clubs

Shilton has played over 1,000 league games in his long career as a goalkeeper. He has won European Cups, a UEFA Super Cup, the First Division championship, and the Football League Cup. He was also awarded OBE (Order of the British Empire) for his contribution to football.  

Shilton debuted at the age of 16 in May 1966 playing for Leicester City Football Club becoming the club's youngest player.

Shilton joined Stoke City in November 1974 and signed a deal worth £325,000, a then-record sum for a goalkeeper. In the 1974-75 season, he made 26 appearances for the club.

Shilton was sold to Nottingham Forest in September 1977. One month into the new season, Shelton joined Nottingham Forest after being presented with a £250,000 offer. In the pivotal 0-0 draw with Coventry City, he produced a save that was lauded by pundits as one of his greatest ever.
